Jayasinghe storms back into second place

The Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition

Angelo Jayasinghe made a dramatic comeback as he regained the second position of the All-Island category of the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012. The Maris Stella skipper managed to edge out De Mazenod’s Shiran Anuruddhika by 59 votes as the 17th week of the competition too came to an end.

With four weeks remaining until the closing stages, Jayasinghe gained 1985 votes from the past two weeks while Anuruddhika’s tally was further braced by just 526 votes which were insufficient to retain his position.

However the leader of the All-Island category remains the same as Sajeewa Salgado of Thurstan reached an overall 17417. It is unlikely that either Jayasinghe or Anuruddhika can pose Salgado any threat in the All-Island competition as the closing days get nearer. Salgado further built up his leadership by 9122 votes from his closest rival Jayasinghe. Next to Anuruddhika are Royal Panadura team mates, Charith Ruchiranga and Madhawa Fernando who remain respectively at the fourth and fifth positions. Zahira’s Lakshan Edirisinghe, Royal Panadura’s Kavindu Ashan, Josephian Dishan Dissanayake, Peterite Thanusha Jayawardane and Thomian skipper Sachin Peiris remain in their respective positions.

Sasindu Perera, the St. John’s Panadura skipper further added 767 votes to his tally to sustain his dominance in the Emerging Schools category. Perera had a slight gap during the past few weeks against Tharindu Guruge of President’s College Kotte. But by the 17th week he managed to boost up the gap by 917 votes. Lakshan Kodagoda of Gateway topped the 31,000 mark as he maintains his stranglehold on the International Schools’ category which seems to be gradually slowing down. For the past two weeks Kodagoda has just obtained 27 votes but he still leads by 11,295 votes over Nishan Perera of Lyceum Nugegoda who has accomplished 20283 votes. To make the competition more interesting readers can send in as many coupons as they wish until May 24.
