Mithun Perera stamps his mark as Lee Westwood regains world No.1 spot

Twenty five year old Mithun Perera continued his tremendous rise in the golfing ranking as he made the cut out of a full field of 160 professional golfers in the CIMB NIAGA INDONESIAN MASTERS, a major tournament in the Asian Golf Tour.

Mithun got an invitation after finishing second in the highly competitive ISPS Handa Singapore Asian Tour Tournament as a top 5 finisher. Mithun Perera grabbed the opportunity with both hands when he made the cut being one under par after the first two rounds, where the cut was administered at three over par with only 65 pros making it through to the final two rounds.

Mithun’s achievement is all the more creditable as Michael Campbell, the 2005 US Open Champion, and Ian Woosnam, the 1991 US Masters Winner, could not make the cut. Thongchai Jaidee, the three-time Asian Order of Merit winner, finished 42nd having made the cut. Sri Lankan compatriot Aruna Rohana also made the cut and finished in 57th place 3 over par.

Mithun Perera, with his extreme accuracy in his long game and brilliant short game, ended the four rounds 4 under par and in joint 23rd place, 14 strokes behind the winner Lee Westwood, who regained the world #1 spot having started the tournament ranked third in the world. Lee Westwood was also the defending champion and proved his liking to the course with a sensational four rounds to establish himself as one of the best professional golfers in the world today.

Mithun Perera is now ranked 18th on the Asian Golf Tour list even though he has not got the tour card which is proof of his maturity and growth in only his debut year on the Asian Tour.

Mithun was very proud and appreciative of the support he has received from the members of the Royal Colombo Golf Club and the Sri Lanka Golf Union. He had a special word of gratitude for Mr. Priyath Bandu Wickrama Chairman Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Mr. Nihal Keppetipola Managing Director of the SLPA, who have supported Mithun since 2009, when he was an amateur champion. Mithun was also proud to be employed by the SLPA as the Colombo Port holds a very special position in the Asian Region as a commercial hub and as one of the most dynamic ports in Asia.

Mithun Perera is a Sri Lankan treasure who is committed to excel and achieve the highest possible ranking in the Asian Tour by winning the Asian Tour Tournaments and then earning a world ranking on the European Tour and the world’s greatest golf stage, the US Tour.
