Bens runners-up in athletics

St. Benedict’s emerged runners-up in the Western Province Schools Athletic Meet which was held at Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Bens won the relay events and were placed first runners-up in the senior athletic championship and field events.

Their junior athletes were placed third in the junior athletics championship. The Under-19 runners of St. Benedict’s comprising Ashantha Kumara, Krishan Madushanka, Lakshan Silva, R. G. M. Athauda and R. Perera won the 100x4 and 400x4 relays. Sprinter Ashantha Kumara went on to win the 100 metres final and was placed third in the 200 metres final. Lakshan Silva was placed second in the 100 metres and 200 metres events while Krishan Madushanka won the 400 metres final.

In the Under-17 age group Shehan Dhananjaya won the discus throw event and was placed second at shot-putt. Dhananjaya was adjudged the best athlete of the age category. Mahela Jayatissa won the long jump event in the Under-13 age category. St. Benedict’s junior relay team comprising Shiran Anjula, Sahan Tharaka, Yohan Chamuditha and Malaka Jayatissa won the 100x4 metres finals. In the Under-11 age category Deshan Fernando won the 100 metres event and was placed second in the 75 metres final.
