Zesta flavour for Trinity Rugby
By Aubrey Kuruppu

Everybody loves a winner. Some sponsors fight shy of taking the plunge and backing a potential winner. To their credit, Watawala Plantations Limited spotted the potential in this year's Trinity rugby side and decided to sponsor Trinity's rugby development programme for the next three years, dishing out a whopping five million a year.

Trinity rugger experienced more ups than downs this year, but the losses to Science College, Royal and Isipathana were particularly galling. However, all that was quickly forgotten with the astounding, and incredible kind of win over Royal in the second leg to lay their hands on the Bradby after three years. What is more, the foresight of Watawala Plantations Limited has been recorded in ample measure.

Around 400 kids, of all age groups, are covered in this development programme. Inter-house matches, which unearth quite a bit of talent, take pride of place. The idea behind this programme is to have players with proven skills in place to step up when vacancies arise.

The man behind this project is Vish Govindasamy, Group Managing Director, Watawala Plantations Limited. He is of the view that the standard of rugger in the schools is quite high. "Established schools," he says, "need funds to maintain standards. Old boys who have made good in the corporate sector should put their hands up!"

The College authorities have consented to having the Zesta brand logo on their playing kit. Accordingly, the name Zesta is given a lot of prominence on the back of the rugby jersey. Vish Govindasamy, an ardent old boy of Trinity, feels it is but right that he should give something backto the school, that by and large, made him what he is today
