Sri Lankan company changes the shape of tea

By Chanaka de Silva

A Sri Lankan tea company has changed the shape of tea to a tablet in the form of a tea pod for the first time in the world as a fully home grown product, researched, developed and tested with a unique local identity.

Chamwin Natural Foods Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd based in Ratnapura launched the first ever ‘Tea Pod’ at a ceremony held at the auditorium of the Sri Lanka Tea Board in Colombo on Tuesday.

Minister of Plantation Industries Mahinda Samarasinghe who participated as the chief guest at the launching ceremony, said “We have to be sensitive to consumer preferences and aggressively equip ourselves for the further development of brand marketing,” He noted that instead of exporting bulk tea there is a need to increase the value added tea exports.

“We should improve the quality of our tea and increase the efficiency of the production and re-planting, factory modification are also vital,” he said, assuring that the ministry will give every assistance to promote this innovative product. Chairman of the company Chula Naotunna said it was necessary to produce tea in a way the local consumer could have a good cup of tea at a low price.

The Tea Pod which took nine years of research to develop has now been perfected. With its’ small surface area it has a very much lesser likelihood of going stale which is a major advantage in storage over loose tea or tea bags.

The small size gives another advantage of it being possible to pack more in a lesser space. This is a another major cost saving factor of this product as the quantity that goes into each cube is the equivalent of a full teaspoon of tea leaves. It is different from other forms of tea consumption as it offers convenience, conservation, compactness and consistency, Mr Naotunna added.
