Going down memory lane with Motha jellies

Way back in 1920, Tiburtius Motha began importing confectionaries and jellies from the UK and sold them to the local market with an element of success. But by 1960, the import restrictions in place affected the imports.

By that time the present chairman, Motha Confectionary Works Pvt Ltd , Julius Motha joined the family business along with his brother and started manufacturing toffees and jellies and successfully added several other products like custards and blancmanges.

Last week, Julius Motha went down ‘memory lane’ at a briefing on the company’s 50th anniversary. The entire audience was served with their favourite jelly and two best known Sri Lankan culinary experts - Ms Shantha Mayadunne and R L Clement – were invited to share their experience with Motha products.

Ms Mayadunne said that 50 years in the market resulting in market leadership is a fact to be reckoned with, as such existence could only be possible by winning the hearts of the consumer for its consistent quality, reliability and trust in the backdrop of other competitive products. Mr Clement said that Motha products are unique as some of them are better than international products.

Mr Motha said that in some of their products they are the market leaders and 10% is exported. He said the sales are still increasing and to coincide with the anniversary they are planning to introduce new products. He said that they are also celebrating the 25 years of a partnership with Delmege Distributors Pvt Ltd who distributes Motha products.

The Motha product range now includes Quick set jelly (moss jelly) Diet Jelly, Faluda Mix, Pudding Mixes, ingredients baking powder, such as icing sugar, baking powder, Gelatine, Corn floor, essences and colouring.
