Creating an international platform for local designs

The Sri Lanka Design Festival, initiated by the Academy of Design (AOD) will take place for the second time this year. The festival was initiated with a multitude of objectives the main one being the development of design education in Sri Lanka and the South Asian region.

SLDF spreads across the six main creative disciplines; Fashion Design, Graphics and Advertising, Product Design, Jewellery Design, Interior Design and Architecture and Traditional Crafts.

The Sri Lanka Design Festival 2010, AOD has brought in over a 100 international creative professionals including global design leaders like the legendary fashion writer and critic, Sir Colin McDowell who is also the brand ambassador of SLDF, Orsola De Castro – one of the most influential women in the UK eco fashion as the co-founder and curator of Estethica, Topshop, M & S, Tesco, Asos and many more.

SLDF will be an interactive educational experience for design enthusiasts in the region, with over 50 hands-on workshops by international designers and retailers, seminars by global opinion leaders, graduate fashion shows and exhibitions and much more.

SLDF 2010 is also the first ever carbon neutral event in Sri Lanka, where all the pollution and carbon emission created by the event due to air travel will be neutralized by forestation and other means; which will be monitored and assisted by the Carbon Consulting Company (CCC).

The Sri Lanka Design Festival (SLDF) is organised by the AOD in partnership with the Export Development Board (EDB) along with the Principal Sponsorship of MAS Holdings.

AOD was supported by the EDB and the principal sponsor of the event – MAS, along with. Sri Lankan Airlines, Sri Lanka Tourism, Mount Lavinia Hotel, Dialog and many more in organizing this national celebration of the creative arts. Through SLDF, AOD hopes to create an international platform for local design graduates and drive Sri Lankan creative education to reach highest global standards.
