Pacie Janodha puts Chilaw Marians on top

Under 23 Final

By M. Shamil Amit

If the first day of play belonged to NCC’s left arm pacie Chathura Peiris. Then it was a tit for tat on day two as Chilaw Marians right arm pacie Arosh Janodha dominated the proceedings in two sessions of play in the final of the Under 23 cricket tournament played at the SSC ground.

Arosh made the NCC side struggle for their runs as at one stage he had them struggling for survival on 88 for 5 with a four wicket haul before skipper Roshan Laksiri and his deputy Shashrika Pussegolla’s recovery act saw them go into lunch on 140 for 5.

But later in the post lunch session Arosh along with left arm leggie Geeth Alwis tormented the NCC batting again. They had their opponents in all sorts of trouble and succeeded in bowling them out for 175.

Shashrika and Roshan were the only pair to put in some resistance adding 67 runs for the sixth wicket and the separation of the duo spelt doom for NCC. Shashrika made a seven boundary knock of 57 while Roshan chipped in with a 35. Pacie Arosh was in terrific form and ended with impressive figures of 6 for 46 while Alwis supported bagging two wickets for just four runs.

The opening days play highlight saw a fine knock of 98 by Geeth Kumara which included 14 boundaries and a six who saved Chilaw Marians by putting three valuable partnerships which were all over 60 runs.

The best was for the fifth wicket with Buddi Samarawickrema which yielded 79 runs. Chilaw Marians from a comfortable 214 for 4 collapsed to a score of 242 losing their last six wickets for just 28 runs.
Chilaw Marians 242 (Geeth Kumara 98, Buddi Samarawickrema 46, Umesh Karunaratne 36, Shihan Kamileen 17: Chathura Peiris 6 for 50, Roshan Laksiri 2 for 47) and 122 for 2 (Lahiru Weragala 56, Geeth Alwis 42, Geeth Kumara 16 n.o.)

NCC (53/1 overnight) 175 (Shashrika Pussegolla 57, Roshan Laksiri 35, Rishan Kavinga 33, Haroon Mowjood 19: Arosh Janodha 6 for 46, Geeth Alwis 2 for 4)
