CSE to set up in Jaffna

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) is planning to set up a branch in Jaffna later this year, according to CSE officials. “The CSE board has in principle sanctioned this (move) and next month some CSE officials will visit Jaffna to finalise the location,” Surekha Sellahewa, CEO, CSE told the Sunday Times FT.

Udaya Sri Kariyawasam, Chairman Securities and Exchange Commission confirmed this saying this will be CSE’s fifth branch. He said SEC recently visited Jaffna in a bid to see future development possibilities in the North. “This was done under the ‘Uthuru Wasanthaya’ programme where we wanted to encourage new listings from the Northern peninsula.”

He said when the team met with investors and professionals in Jaffna, they raised many queries about investing in the CSE-listed stocks also the risks associated with capital market products, as opposed to investing in banks. Dr.D.B.P.H. Dissabandara, Director Financial Services Academy (FSA), the education arm of the SEC (who also visited Jaffna with the SEC team) noted that investors and professionals in Jaffna showed interest in capital market education. “They requested that FSA should conduct programmes in Jaffna. We are collaborating with the University of Jaffna in this regard,” he said.
