By Sanath Weerasuriya

‘Legends of Sri Lankan Pop’, spectacular star studded Concert will come alive at The BMICH on November 11. This is a brain child of Rajiv Sebastian, who originally introduced concepts such as Tribute to Clarence, Back to the 70's, 70's to the Millennium, 5 Star Explosion, Calypso Carnival, The Return of Desmond & the Clan.

This mega event would include a rare variety of Sri Lankan entertainers living here and abroad, who represented the golden era of the 60's, 70's and 80's of Sri Lankan pop.

The rare combination includes Desmond de Silva (flown from UK), Dezmond Rodrigo (flown from USA.), A.E. Manoharan (flown from India), Annesley Malawana, Indrani Perera, Sunil Perera, Anil Bharathi, Lankika Perera, Lilanthi Karunanayake, Nihal Nelson, Luke Henriques, Vernon Perera, Ranil Mallawarachchi, Dalreen Suby, Sohan Weerasinghe, Priyantha Fernando, Priyankara Perera, Susil Fernando, Priya Sooriyasena, Menik Chandrika, Paul Fernando, Shayami Fonseka and Rajiv Sebastian.
While Vijaya Corea and Ariyasiri Vithanage, another two legends in showbiz would handle the presentation, Channa Wijewardene, Anushan and Rozanne Diasz would be in charge of the choreography.

Musical backing will be provided by popular band Rajiv & the Clan assisted by a classical guitarist, flutist, saxophonist, trumpeter and a percussionist to regenerate the original acoustic sound of the 60's and 70's.

‘It was great working with Annesley, who presented ‘Stars of 70's’, where I learnt so much about entertainment and I thought this concept should be widened by bringing in exclusively the legends of Sri Lankan Pop music. The legents living here and overseas, except for the legends who represented the Sri Lankan Calypso music will be represent at this Concert’ Rajiv explained.

‘Since I was adamant of presenting both ‘Desmonds’, Desmond de Silva and Dezmond Rodrigo and Manoharan, I am grateful to the two airlines and the hotels who came forward for my rescue. In fact, Dezmond Rodrigo will be performing here after 20 years’ he added.

For the very first time, a beauty pageant would be choreographed by Rozanne Diasz , while Desmond de Silva appears on stage to sing '’To all the Girls I loved’. Before' to bring back memories of exactly what he did in the mid 80's, when Udeshika was crowned Miss Sri Lanka.

This mega event featuring 23 artistes would be the biggest tribute ever paid to the legends of Sri Lankan pop who represented the memorable era of the 60's and 70's. Popular film stars and beauty queens, too, would appear on stage for songs created by these legends for films during this era.

Most of the old sons will be sung as a medley to cover the most number of hits within the limited time available. ‘Legends of Sri Lankan Pop’, is in aid of The F & G Welfare Club and the media sponsors would be the pioneer Sri Lankan TV channel, who originally boosted all these entertainers ITN, Lakhanda, Daily Mirror and TV Times.
