Best of Berlinale at the Goethe

The Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka will present an exquisite bit of this year's. Berlinale Film Festival, which took place from 7-17 February. 'The Best of Berlinale 2008' - as shown at the Film Festival "Berlinale" 2008 in Berlin, Germany will be screened from August 5-8 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at Goethe Hall, German Cultural Centre.

The festival will be moderated by well-known filmmaker and scriptwriter Dr. Tissa Abeysekara. The film screening will kickoff on August with Polish film 'Katyn', a story of the Polish officers who were murdered near Katyn by the Soviet secret service.

Directed by Andrzej Wajda, it is also a story of their relatives, many of whom waited for years for the return of their husbands, fathers, sons or brothers.

On Wednesday, August 6, 'Eye to Eye - All about German Film', a film about the love of cinema, a journey of discovery through over a century of German film history will be screened.

Filmmakers Michael Althen and Hans Helmut Prinzler show how ten people working in film today remember their favourite films of yesteryears.

'Christ stopped at Eboli', a French-Italian production by Francesco Rosi, featuring writer, painter and doctor Carlo Levi will be screened on Thursday, August 7.

On account of his anti-fascist activities, Dr. Levi was banned in 1935 by Mussolini's regime to Aliano, a village in the mountains of southern Italy, where he discovers a world that has been forgotten by time and history.

'Head on', German direction, winner of Golden Bear-2004, directed by Fatih Akin will be screened on Friday, August 8.

Raw, impassioned and provocative, German drama 'Head-On' lives up to its title in its opening minutes, as angry alcoholic Cahit (Birol Unel) deliberately drives his car into a wall.

This failed suicide attempt brings him together with Sibel (Sibel Kekilli), the equally desperate daughter of strict Muslim Turks, who begs Cahit to join her in a marriage of convenience.

Soon enough, though, faked feelings turn real in a film that's part comedy, part tragedy and filled with a sense of edgy surprise.

The films are with English subtitles and the Goeth Institut welcomes all film lovers.
