“If there is instability in the country, it will not recover. There should be stability. It is necessary to provide accurate information among the people to create that stability,” President Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

He made these comments while addressing a workshop held on Friday at the Government Information Department to apprise the media secretaries of all Cabinet ministers, State ministers and governors about the state communication mechanism.

Pointing out that nothing can be achieved without propaganda, the President called on the media secretaries to commit to revealing the Government’s “Rebuilding the country” programme to the people without delay.

“The Government’s programme has to be conveyed to the people. We are facing difficult times. I do not think such a situation was faced during the 20th century or even before that. We have to get out of this. Many people have lost hope. We must correct the situation. So we have to publicise the Government’s programme,” he said.

“Unlike with print and electronic media, currently we are facing many problems with social media. It carries positive and negative information, which is one of the major problems the entire world is facing. This bad impact affects us especially at this time. Therefore, it is your responsibility to address this challenge appropriately. If you do not take up this responsibility, the whole country will face more problems. The reason you are here today is for you to understand this message,” the President told the media secretaries.

President Wickremesinghe also suggested to convene the group once in three months for discussions.

Minister Bandula Gunawardana, State Minister Shantha Bandara, President’s Senior Media Adviser Sunanda Maddumabandara, President’s Media Division Director General Dhanushka Ramanayake, Independent Television Network Chairman Sudarshana Gunawardena and the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka President and Editor in Chief Lankadeepa and Wijeya Newspapers Ltd Director Siri Ranasinghe were present at the workshop, which was organised under the guidence of the Government Information Department Director General Dinith Chinthaka Karunaratne.
