More drugs, more guns: STF finds gun promotion by drug dealers
View(s):The Police Special Task Force (STF) has unravelled a scheme by foreign drug dealers to sell more weapons to local distributors by creating clashes among groups.
A senior STF official said that foreign drug dealers have arranged to provide complimentary weapons, such as firearms, according to the amount of drugs purchased by them.
They said that the persons allegedly smuggling large quantities of drugs via Afghanistan and Pakistan were receiving weapons as well as a way of enticing them into the trade.
The official added they believe this was a means to draw drug dealers to weapons, and to create more clashes among them so more groups would purchase larger quantities of drugs in order to buy more weapons.
In the past few months, 48 new pistols have been recovered through raids conducted by the Special Task Force.
Those arrested have confessed that five weapons were being offered for large scale drug deals – including T56 weapons and pistols.
Meanwhile, the STF has also had an insight into cases reported last year as they discovered a pattern where firearms were discovered along with drugs.
During the previous year, when the STF detected 150 kg of Heroin, they also found a parcel with 10 pistols. In a separate drug raid at Aththidiya, the STF found five T-56 semi-automatic firearms which were left behind by drug distributors.
