A Prisons’ Headquarters official has been appointed to investigate the death of a prisoner who fell into a hot cauldron of curry.

The official said that the inmate housed at Agunukolapelessa Prison was identified as a 62-year-old resident of Daraniyagala. He had been charged with a murder in 2001 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The prisoner who had been drafted into the kitchen work division had slipped and fallen into a hot cauldron while trying to remove another cauldron from the fire with the help of an inmate.

Following the incident, the prisoner who sustained serious burn injuries was admitted to the Tangalle Hospital. But after receiving treatment for 10 days he had succumbed to his injuries.

The Department of Prisons assured the public that they were taking steps to avoid such incidents re-occurring. They added that apart from the investigation launched by the Prisons Headquarters, a separate investigation was being carried out by the Agunukolapelessa Prison Superintendent.
