Blocked drains, and the scattering of plastic bags and containers by road sides have increased the potential breeding grounds for Dengue mosquitoes.

Several areas in Colombo City and suburbs  have become mosquito breeding grounds, as well as mosquito habitats. Some drainage systems have been overgrown with vegetation and the blocked water flow is creating ideal places for mosquito breeding.

While the government is engaging in dengue eradication programmes during rainy seasons, when dengue surges are reported, most of the blocked drainage systems remain unattended to.

Even though the authorities carry out fumigation, as well as public awareness, still mosquito breeding areas continue to grow thanks to everyone’s negligence.
