Shuttler Oshadie loses battle against cancer aged 27

Former national badminton player Oshadie Kuruppu lost her battle against blood cancer this week. The 27-year-old South Asian Games medalist was diagnosed with leukemia in 2020, few months after graduating with honours in sports science and management from the University of Sabaragamuwa.

Since then, she has been through treatment and underwent a bone marrow transplant last year. Nevertheless, she lost her battle on Tuesday.

Oshadie represented Sri Lanka in several international competitions including the 2016 South Asian Games, where she won a silver in team events, 2016 Badminton Asia Team Championships, 2017 2017 Summer Universiade and 2018 World University Badminton Championship. She received her primary education at the Visakha Vidyalaya.

A bright student, Oshadie took to badminton at a very young age and represented Sri Lanka in many a junior level competition in the South Asian and Asian region. She won the 2009 Badminton Asia Youth Under 16 team and individual championships double silver medal and the bronze medal in the team event in 2009.

She was a school, university and national colours winner. Her funeral was held on Thursday in Boralesgamuwa.
