The Ministry of Education (MoE) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Embassy, to enable Volunteer English teachers from the US Peace Corps (USPC) to teach in rural schools.

This follows a discussion Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had with US Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz, last week (August 8), where it was agreed to permit 150 teachers under the DELIC Teacher Training Programme (TTP) 2020, to teach in remote schools in the country.

A first batch of 30 teachers will be deployed to the Uva and Central Provinces to commence teaching beginning of next year. The teachers will serve in the schools for two years, and the programme extended to all 9 Provinces.

This is the second time the DELIC TTP is being conducted in Sri Lanka. It was first here was in 1960 and conducted programmes until the 1990s.

MoE Consultant H.M. Sirisena, USPC National Director Kris Besch, MoE English Unit officials and US Embassy representatives also attended the discussion.
