UoM further strengthens Sri Lanka’s first MBA in Management of Technology (MoT) and MBA in Entrepreneurship Programmes

Entrepreneurship skills will empower the students, to bring their innovations to the market as competitive products. In order to reach for next level of growth, Sri Lanka needs this techno-entrepreneurship revolution. With this vision, Department of Management of Technology (MOT) was established two decades ago.

The department of MOT address areas of technology management and techno-entrepreneurship producing the next generation of techno-entrepreneurs.

Department of MOT introduced the Sri Lanka’s first and the only MBA, specialised in Management of technology, two decades ago, which is reaching its twentieth intake this year. This renowned MBA provides unique knowledge mix, that is highly relevant for the current industry needs. Managing Technology for Competitiveness, Management of Innovation and R&D, Technology Transfer, Business Process Management, and Project Management are the specialised subjects. In addition, there are several general management modules focused on the areas of Marketing, Finance, Operations, Leadership and HR. MBA in MOT is reputed among the leading professionals for its quality and versatility.

Recently, high-end entrepreneurship related modules were introduced to this MBA programme.

Furthermore, many research students are following research degrees in the areas of entrepreneurship at the Department of MOT. MOT Dept’s academic staff have undertaken many research and related works on entrepreneurship and made several publications in international high impact journals.

Since 2017, this Dept. has been offering even entrepreneurship minor for BSc Engineering degree. With this background and after many market surveys and industry consultation meetings, MOT Dept. has identified the MBA programme specialised in Entrepreneurship as a timely requirement and started offering this programme since 2016.

This new degree programme will inculcate not only entrepreneurial culture among the Sri Lankans, but also intrapreneurial and leadership skills as well.

Most of the followers of this programme are either business starters or future business leaders in this region. Especially being the best technical University in Sri Lanka, Moratuwa can utilize its technical brains (Over 100 PhDs from good ranking world class Universities and over 40 full Professors are working at Moratuwa University) to commercialize innovative business ideas with right business ventures. This will help Sri Lanka to reach next level of growth by eradicating poverty and becoming a high income country in the region.

Most of these graduates surely will start their own businesses in the near future and will help to create many employment opportunities and other value additions to national economy rather than been job seekers.

In Sri Lanka, currently no other University has offered MBA specialised in entrepreneurship, with more focus on technology aspects. Especially, highly specialized modules such as Technology Commercialization, Innovation and R&D, Business Incubation, Technology Business Plans, Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation, Entrepreneurship Lab with Business Leaders, Intrapreneurship and Business Leadership and New Venture Financing Options are only offered by this degree programme. Furthermore, students are allowed to take any modules from Management of Technology MBA programme to give more exposure to technology related ventures.

To enhance the quality of the MBA programme, a panel of international experts has been established by linking Sejong Business School in South Korea, Amity University in Lucknow, and University of Utara Malaysia. Out-bound training programmes for the participants of MBA in MOT, have been conducted in Malaysia and Thailand from 2014.

Applications for both MBA in MOT and MBA in Entrepreneurship are now called. The closing date of MBA in MOT is 24th August 2019, whereas applications for MBA in Entrepreneurship closes on 20th September.
