The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week said the Examinations Department’s move to reduce the allowances paid to education officers involved in the conducting of the national exams, is an injustice.

In a letter dated June 27, 2019, issued to all Zonal offices, the Commissioner of Examinations directs that all officers working for over 12 hours, will be paid a combined allowance. Hence, a Coordinating Officer will be paid Rs. 600, Assistant Coordinating Officers Rs. 500 and Examination Centre Staff Rs. 300.

Hitherto, these officers were paid as per Circular No. 20 of August 21, 2018, which stipulates allowances according to the salary anomalies received by the individuals. Accordingly, an allowance of Rs. 700 will be paid to those receiving a salary of up to Rs. 32,779, Rs. 800 to those receiving a salary between Rs.32,780 and Rs. 42,479, and Rs. 1,000 for those getting above Rs 42,479. It also stipulates an extra 50% allowance for those serving round the clock.

The CTU has requested that allowances recommended in Circular No. 20/2018 be restored.   - CC
