The Higher Education Ministry will soon seek approval for the Quality Assurance Accreditation Bill to maintain standards in Non-State Universities and Higher Education Institutions.

Additional Secretary of Non-State Universities K.R. Uduwawala told the Education Times that Cabinet approval has been obtained for the proposed Bill, which they had been working on for the past 2 years, and expect it to be effective this year.

Under the proposed Bill, a 13-Member Commission will be appointed by the President, to monitor the activities of Non-State Universities and Higher Education Institutions.

The Commission is expected to evaluate and approve the syllabuses and other educational conditions every 5 years.

“This is the first time there will be a process to monitor these sectors,” he said.

He said the Commission will be empowered to revoke the registration of an institution, for failure to maintain proper standards, including the syllabuses and teaching.

The Commission will also be empowered to remove any subjects from the syllabus.

Measures, could also be taken to ensure that, if local institutions claim they are affiliated to foreign institutions, they should ensure that those standards are maintained here.
