The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) has written to the Governors of 4 Provinces, questioning the Central Government’s posting of Sports Trainers (ST) to Provincial schools, despite the Governors refusing to accept them to those schools.

The Ministry of Education (MoE), which recruited 3,888 STs recently, has posted them to schools in the Western, Central, Southern and North-Western Provinces, through the Zonal Directors of the Provinces.

The CTU said that the teachers in the schools have started protesting against these appointments, as the STs do not have only 6 Ordinary Level passes, with a 3rd place at District level Sports.

According to the Teacher Service Minute, any teacher recruited into the system should have a minimum qualification of Advanced Level.

The CTU claims that the MoE failed to follow proper guidelines in recruiting them. “Appointments were given based on oral interviews. These are all political appointees,” claimed CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin.
