The Ministry of Education (MoE) will seek Cabinet approval shortly to make compulsory the registration of all International schools, with the MoE. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told Education Times that the move will enable the MoE to supervise the International schools to ensure that proper standards are maintained.

“We will also be able to ascertain as to how many International schools are functioning in the country,” he said. He said they already have received complaints about the quality of education and the high fees levied by these schools. He said that the number of students per class room, lack of facilities and also the qualifications of some of the teachers was also an issue.

Minister Kariyawasam said that an opportunity will be given for the schools to correct the shortcomings, with action taken against those who fail to correct the shortcomings, he added. “These schools should not be allowed to operate only with a business motive,” he said. - Damith Wickremasekara
