Around 320,000 Grade 1 students who joined schools this year have not received their quota of Uniform Vouchers (UV), the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) said. The CTU said the MoE confirmed not taking the new entrants into account when preparing the UVs for the 4.2 million students in the country.

The Government was compelled to extend the validity of the UVs till end February 2019, following the impasse created by the dissolution of Parliament in October 2018. CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the Government has also failed to complete the distribution of textbooks to most students. “There are many students who have not received their textbooks for various subjects,” he said.

However, the MoE said in a press release that UVs would be issued before the completion of the 1st Term. Issuance of UVs which commenced in 2017, is available for government and approved private schools and clergy and lay students in Pirivenas.
