Bike hits man on pedestrian crossing

A 50-year-old father of two was knocked down while he was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing earlier this week, by a motor bike proceeding to Rajagiriya, a coroner’s court inquiry was told.

The rider, who was reportedly speeding, had hit the pedestrian critically injuring him. Though rushed to the National Hospital, the victim Jayasirige Panditharatne, 50, a resident of Wanduramba, Galle died the following day.

According to the Welikada Police the bike had not stopped at the crossing.

The motorcyclist K Sanjeya, 28, a worker at SLPA has been arrested. Colombo Traffic Magistrate, Chandana Kalanasooriya allowed the suspect to be released on a surety bail of Rs500,000. The Magistrate also ordered the Welikada Police to produce the suspect on October 30 for trial.
