The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) lodged a complaint with Western Province (WP) Governor K.C. Logeswaran, last week, against discrepancies in the posting of 453 newly appointed teachers to schools in the WP.

CTU Gen.Sec. Joseph Stalin charged that the WP has once again failed to post new recruits to schools with a shortage of teachers.
He said that, despite the shortage of teachers in the difficult zones, the new teachers are being sent to schools that already have sufficient teachers. “There are some schools that have a teacher for every 18 students,” he said

He said there are difficult zones even in the WP such as schools in Colombo North, Kolonnawa and Moratuwa areas, badly in need of teachers. Mr Stalin said the placements are being made in keeping with names recommended by politicians.

He recalled that, last year too, around 300 teachers were recruited and posted to schools which had an excess of teachers. A complaint to the WP Governor was met with, “It would be investigated”. “But nothing has happened to date,” he said.

Mr Stalin opined that this state of affairs will not solve shortage of teachers in difficult stations. “This must change,” he said.
