A Jaffna Primary School occupied for over 27 years by the military for security reasons, was returned to the school community on Monday, to enhance resettlement and the reconciliation process within the region.

Urani Primary School in Valikamam North, Jaffna, was included in the High Security Zone (HSZ), in 1990. After the new Govt took office, many areas in Valikamam were returned to their rightful owners to resettle.

Jaffna Security Forces Commander Maj.Gen. Darshana Hettiarachchi officially handed over the School to Jaffna Additional District Secretary S. Muralitharan. Welcoming the return of the School, Valikamam residents said this would send a positive signal to those displaced and wanting to return to their homes, as normalcy returned to the area. “Our children can go to school in nearby schools, rather than travel to distant schools,” a villager said.
