The Cabinet this week approved an urgent proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to fill existing vacancies of teaching staff in the Northern Province (NP), with another batch of 172 Contract teachers given permanency. Accordingly, initially, more than 700 teachers including those who work on voluntary and contract basis would be incorporated into the teaching service.

The Cabinet memorandum noted a severe shortage of teachers in the NP, due to the 30-year war, and needed to be filled urgently to improve the Educational conditions in the region. Those working as contract teachers, with adequate qualifications, would be absorbed into the permanent cadre, based on their Teachers’ Service Minute.

A senior official of the NP Education Ministry, said that teaching appointments for 672 volunteer teachers were approved by the Education Ministry last month, but the official letters have yet to be handed over to them. Currently, some 12,000 volunteer teachers are serving in 12 Education zones in the NP.
