The University of Peradeniya (UoP) is to provide a ‘Leisure Learning Area”- the new concept in Librarianship- when the new 7-storied, 40,000 sq.ft. Library building is completed. The foundation stone for this building was laid by Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Upul B. Disssanayake adjacent to the present Central Library of the Campus.

Prof Dissanayake said the next target is the construction of a Convocation Hall which has been on the cards for the last 75 years. He also added that, since the UoP is 75-years-old, it is time to bring it under the Heritage City concept. The Buddhist Chaplain of the Campus, Ven, Bamunugalle Santha Vimala Thera headed the religious ceremonies, with other religious dignitaries conducted their respective religious ceremonies.

Deputy VC Prof Lakshman Wijeweera, along with the Deans of the Faculties participated at the event. The Acting Chief Librarian of the UoP, Dr Rasiah Maheswaran said there are nearly 300,000 books, apart from the ‘Legal Deposits’ that come into the Library. Then there are the presentation material and also donations. The UoP has no Museum which is another aspect of the University this new building will resolve among others, for the future. - L.B.
