A young lawyer-to-be and schoolgirl succumb to dengue

A young girl from Mahara, Kadawatha, who was due to take oaths as a lawyer in September, succumbed to dengue on Friday, a coroner’s court inquiry was told.

Mangala Kottachchilage Dilini Tharangika ( 27) from Varahanthuduwa, Mahara had high fever on Tuesday and admitted to the Ragama hospital from where she was sent to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) and then transferred to the National Hospital, where she passed away Friday morning.

Her father said his only child had fallen victim to dengue. He told the inquiry that he realised that his daughter had fever on Tuesday (July 25). Inquirer Into Sudden Deaths Iresha Deshani Samaraweera said that the victim died of multiple organ failure due to dengue haemorrhagic fever.

The body was released without a post mortem examination being conducted. In another reported death a grade four student of St Mary’s Balika Maha Vidyalaya Chilaw succumbed to dengue fever on Friday at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRCH) Borella.
The student’s mother told a coroner’s court that her daughter Mihindukulasooriya Ayesha Purnima Perera from Cherry Watte in Chilaw had contracted fever at school on July 21 and had been taken to a doctor. On finding that she was dengue positive she was admitted to the LRCH and treated at the ICU. She died on Friday, July 28.
City Coroner Mohammad Ashroof Rumi said based on medical reports death was due to dengue haemorrhagic fever.
