History narrated through dance

“History is narrated through the eyes of the victors…” – It is this idea which fuelled the recent performance of Ravana Rajyam which was staged by the Tamil Manavar Sangam (Tamil Literary Society) of Ladies’ College.

The story from Ravana’s point of view was narrated through dance and song. The play was intended to be easy to understand even for people who do not speak Tamil, and the actions conveyed through dance with accompanying facial expressions contributed greatly towards this.

The scenes where the younger students took to the stage were almost comparable in quality to those of their older counterparts as they were all well synchronised, with precise movements in time to the music.

The music and lyrics which were provided by a team of musicians on the side of the stage alongside a screen where the scenes were projected saw the traditional world meet the modern world.

The screen, which had been provided by studio 3000 was an interesting feature, as detailed images of greenery and war were projected where appropriate, adding detail to the scenes which traditional props could not.

With colourful costumes and expressive performances, this rendition of Ravana Rajyam was indeed quite entertaining.
