Isipathana prevailed over Wesley by 28 points to nil in their last match of the Singer U20 inter-school rugby league tournament played at Havelock  Park yesterday.

The match was to decide who would end up third in the points table and Isipathana who came into game in that spot with this win retained the slot with Wesley ending up as the fourth best team.

The match was played low profile and Isipathana having taken a slender 8-0 lead at the breather made up their points through five tries and a penalty.

Though Isipathana scored by four tries in the second half the first half turned up to be drab as there was little effort put in by the two teams. It took as much as 25 minutes in the first half for the first scoring to be done which was a penalty booted by full back Chamod Fernando.

Isipathana increased their lead in the dying stages of the first half with slipper and centre Sumudu Rankothge going for an unconverted try with which the short whistle was blow.

The second half saw Isipathana going into the attack which ended in full back Chamod Fernando succeeding to breach the Wesley defense three minutes into the game and ten minutes later Chamod went over for his second try and with both conversions fluffed Pathana went into the lead at 18-0.

However the Wesleyites were given little chance by Pathana who the double blue boys found it tough to get past. Later back to back tries in the 19th and 24th minutes by Isipathana with the first winger Nadeeshan Chaminda and the other by second row Sudeera Gayanath sealed the game in favour of the Havelock Park boys.

St Joseph’s outclass Zahira

St Joseph’s outclassed their hometown rivals Zahira by 38 points to 14 in their last match of the Singer U20 inter-schools rugby league tournament played at Welisara yesterday.

The win for St Joseph’s saw them ending up as the fifth best team and having taken a comfortable 18-0 lead at lemons accumulated their points through a goal, five tries and two penalties to the two goals scored by Zahira.

Center Gemunu Chetiya went over three tries while full back Sachin Silva, fly half Chathura Seneviratne and second row K.D. Kavinda scored one with Sachin Silva making the conversion and booting over the two penalties.

For Zahira fly half Zaid Sinhawansa and prop forward Miammar Deen scored the tries with Zaid making the two conversions.
