Thomian proved their grit once again. This time they held on to their resolve and beat Trinity at the post to become the first recipients of the Ranil Abeynaike memorial trophy and also became the first to win the trophy outright since it was introduced in 2013.

Trinity, who led in the first innings by 45 runs, lost their nerve in the second essay.   This time they faulted against the Thomian bowling trio of Thevin Eriyagama, Dellon Peiris and Pavith Ratnayake to bundle the visitors out for a meager 76.

However the Thomians chasing a target of 122 runs in 43 overs did not have it easy.  They too underwent some anxious and was struggling on 99 for 9 before Romesh Nallaperuma and Tehan Schaffter guided them to victory with an unbroken last wicket partnership of 25 runs.

Nalanda coasted to a six wicket win over Maliyadeva in their match concluded at Campbell Place while Gurukula MV Kelaniya was home for tea when they defeated St Anthony’s by six wickets at Wattala.

Josephian left hander Nipun Samarasinghe had the honour of becoming the first batsman to reach the 1000 runs mark in the ongoing Under 19 inter-school cricket season with a knock of 114 in their drawn match against St Benedict’s played at Darley Road.

Nipun’s knock which came off 141 balls comprised 16 boundaries and with support by half tons from Jehan Fernandopulle and Pahan Perera helped St Joseph’s post a score of 364 for 8 in reply to Ben’s score of 282.

Nipun now has scored 1071 runs from 18 matches inclusive of three tons and five half tons with a top score of 158 against Trinity.

An allround performance by Sudeera Weeraratne paved the way for Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama to gain an outright win by ten wickets over Kegalu Vidyalaya at Rathgama.
