Mercantile Swimming Championship 2016

Reigning Champions MAS Holdings proved their dominance of Mercantile Swimming for the 5th successive year, when they won the President’s Challenge Trophy as Overall Champions, at the 10th Mercantile Swimming Championship 2016, concluded at the Thurstan College Swimming Pool complex last Sunday. MAS Holdings scored 720 points to relegate John Keells Holdings with 577 points, to 1st Runner-up, while HSBC Ltd Premier were 2nd Runner-up with 158 points.  It has been a two-cornered battle for Mercantile Swimming supremacy, in the last 9 years with MAS Holdings emerging champs from 2011, while John Keells clinched the championship from the inaugural year in 2007 to 2010.

Organised by the Thurstan College Aquatic Club, the 10th edition for the President’s Challenge Trophy was worked off as Open events for Men and Women in 8 age groups under 2 categories- Novices and Championship, covering all disciplines of Swimming, namely Free Style, Back Stroke, Breast Stroke, Butterfly, Medleys and the respective Relays.  The Mercantile Swimming Championship was inaugurated in 2007, with the participation of 170 Swimmers from 18 Organisations. Since then, it has grown from strength to strength, with 543 Swimmers from 32 Mercantile establishments taking the plunge last year. This event had gained recognition as one of the foremost events in the swimming calendar of Sri Lanka.
