January is a month where many New Year resolutions are born. Committing to it, really is another story. However, among some of the resolutions planned, if ‘dressing nicely this year’ is among one of them then read on. This month’s article is about how to tame your closet so you can confidently try trendy new outfits all year long.

Before you take the plunge! Sort all your clothes

This includes clothes, shoes, bags, accessories etc. First take all of them out of your closet. Start making piles of clothes to donate, throw away, and mend. And with the remaining useable clothing categorize them in to casual, work, party, bottoms, shoes, accessories, bags etc. The more specific you get the easier it would be later on to put an outfit together

Hygiene matters

Clean the closet inside & out carefully. You don’t want dust or bugs in your clothes. Vacuum or sweep the floor, wipe the walls using all-purpose cleaner & sweep away cobwebs that may have accumulated there

Tools for the job

You might need some hangers, hooks, a hammer, boxes, and plastic bags etc. This really depends on how extensive you want this project to be. Some experts also suggest to design & decorate it like a trendy room or a salon so you feel a bit like a star every time you visit it. Might give you an extra dose of confidence to step out!

Ready steady & go!

Once you have an idea of what you have & how you want it to look. Well your half way there. All you need now is to channel your creative instincts & have fun with it!

Here are some trendy & efficient tips to follow:

Color co-ordinate all the clothes

This makes it easy to mix & match your clothes

Use dividers for shelves

This really is a life saver, especially when folding clothes. Because let’s face it those folded clothes don’t stay folded for too long!

Store your items according to frequency of usage

In following this you would be saving time and space. Store the most used items at eye level, less used items below & least used items/ seasonal clothing up high.

Add some simple but creative décor & lighting

This would make it more appealing for you to style yourself & the lighting would make you see what’s inside!

Get a basket for sorting items for later

In reality not all of us are 100% organized all the time. So have a basket or a box to which you could put in items to sort out later without making the closet look like a hurricane swept past every time you go out!

Go digital

If you want to go an extra mile, lots of experts suggest to have digital images stored in your phone or computer with items in your closet. So it would save time on pulling all the clothes out. It could also help you have a memory of outfit ideas

Create your own DIY accessory storage

We girls have so many varieties of these. So storing them all in one type of unit would be impossible. So be creative with hanging sunglasses on strings to bangles in tube structured ornaments or even used bottles. That is basically the essence of my wisdom on organizing your closet. One resolution down, 99 more to go!
