Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club were declared joint winners with SSC at the recently concluded Daily News Trophy 2015 tournament organised by the Colombo District Cricket Association.

This 122 year old cricket club had been dominating Sri Lanka club cricket winning almost all the major tournaments conducted by the then Board Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Cricket.

They started to be at the helm from the year 1963 winning the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy, the then premier cricket tournament led by the late Noel Perera.

From there onwards Bloomfield have the proud distinction of winning all the major domestic tournaments namely Daily News, P. Saravanamuttu, Lakspray, Bristol, Hatna and Donovan Andree Trophies and the SLC Under 23 and the premier league trophy which they won last in 2010/11.

A courageous and a talented set of cricketers led by Sachin Jayawardene, a past captain of Wesley College representing the club in the 2015 Daily News Trophy brought honour to the club being declared Joint Champs along with SSC.

The Reid Avenue club first won the Daily News Trophy in 1954/55 under the captaincy of late C.D.D. Weerasinghe and again in 1970/71 under the captainship of late Charlie Warnakulasuriya.

Its after 44 years this set of cricketers playing the game in its highest traditions and exhibiting excellent sportsmanship on and off the field rewrote the club’s history.

Despite the achievements in the early years Bloomfield had no ground of its own having moved from Chalmers Granaries premises to the pint size area with a wooden hut as its pavilion at Campbell Park and in 1972 the late K.B. Ratnayake, the then Minister of Sports, availed the present club house and the grounds at Reid Avenue on a request made by late Shelley Wickremasinghe, the President of the club.

Bloomfield CC, a club that had made vast contributions to Sri Lanka cricket by producing a large number of international cricketers in the caliber of Bandula Warnapura, Sri Lanka’s first test captain, Anura Ranasinghe, Jayantha Seneviratne, Lalith Kaluperuma, Ajith De Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Roshan Mahanama, Kumara Dharmasena, Chamara Silva and Suraj Randiv to name a few.
