Havelock Sports Club, which celebrated its centenary in August, is hoping to come out as champions in the Dialog Division ‘A’ Inter-Club Rugby League Championship.

The club officials of Havelocks held a press conference to elaborate on their mission for this year’s club rugby season, which they hope to finish off in a high note, as a fitting compliment for the club’s 100-year celebrations.

“It is a matter of great pride for Havelocks that seven of our junior players has been drafted to the Sri Lanka Under-20 squad. It is well known that many of our top players form the core of the current national team.

Rugby is surely thriving at Havelocks in its 100th year and this speaks volumes of the passion and commitment to the sport here,” stated Vimal Senanayake, the Past President of Havelocks.

Famously known as the Park Club, Havelocks were at the bottom some years ago but the dedication of its officials has made it one of the most feared rugby sides in the domestic circuit once again.

Havelocks went on to win the League title a few seasons ago and were the local Sevens champions last season. According to Senanayake, the club has gone through major strides to reach what it has achieved today.

“None of these efforts would be possible without financial support. With the prevailing intense competition among local rugby clubs, the game has become very expensive to sustain.

It is the sponsors who have put their shoulder to the wheel to help us rise up to professional standards.

Havelocks are grateful to its sponsors who have been with us in the past as well as those who are with us today namely ABC Networks and Nation Lanka Promotions. This has helped us keep the club flag flying high,” Senanayake added.
