The Southern Province Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs felicitated veteran athlete Kosala Sahabandu recently.
Sahabandu a son of Matara is an old boy of Rahula College Matara and a champion middle distance runner who established a new Sri Lanka record for the 800 metres event in 1974 and represented Sri Lanka at many international meets in his time.

He was a member of the Sri Lanka 4×400 relay team that established a new Asian Games record at the 1974 Asian Games held in Bangkok and also was a member of the Sri Lanka 4×400 relay quartet at the Moscow Olympics held in 1980.

Felicitating sports men and women of the Southern Province who have brought glory upon their motherland and the Province was the idea of Weerasumana Weerasinghe the Provincial Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Rural Development, Cultural and Art Affairs, Social Welfare, Probation and Child Care Services, Women’s Affairs and Home Economic Enhancement, Housing and Construction and Manpower and Employment of the Southern Province. - PDDS
