He claims he was promised a ticket to contest the January 8 presidential poll from a little known party and he paid part of a million-rupee donation, which the party sought from him. But now he has taken party officials to court for alleged breach of trust.

The disappointed would-have-been candidate is Mohamed Sanoos Hilir Mohamed from Dehiwala and the party thatallegedly did not honour the word is the United Peace Front.

The details of the complaint Mr. Mohamed made to the Maradana police were presented before Maligakanda Magistrate Jayaki de Alwis this week.

The plaintiff said he paid Rs. 300,000 as part of the million-rupee donation to the party after he was promised the candidacy, but instead the party appointed Maulawi Ibrahim Mohanmed Mishlar.

He said the party had encashed the cheque he issued.

The Magistrate issued notice on UPF leader Imithiyas Ahamed Rahuman and the Secretary of the Party Mohamed Izad Cader to appear in court on April 22.

During the police investigation, the party officials had claimed the plaintiff had consented to make the donation and no assurance was made to the plaintiff to make him the party’s candidate. But the plaintiff produced originals of the Elections Department forms which he claimed were given to him by the party.

At the court hearing, the plaintiff’s lawyer Sajitha Jayawardena expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the police were pursuing the case and alleged that there were attempts by influential people to subvert the case.
