NWP bans classes on Sunday mornings and on Poya days

The North Western Provincial Council (NWPC) has banned tuition classes on Sundays and full moon Poya days.

Notice to this effect has been given by the NWPC’s Human Resources Development Authority (HRDA) Chairman S.S.K. Gunawardena.

The notice states that classes for schoolchildren from Grade 1 up to O/L, on Sundays between 6 am and 1.30 pm is prohibited, while classes are banned for an Grades on full moon Poya days.

The HRDA said it that it retains the power to enter institutions during sessions, for inspection and obtain relevant information.

Contravening or bypassing the law is a punishable offence, with a maximum fine of up to Rs 50,000, or one year’s imprisonment, or both, the Authority said.
