Four thousand four hundred teachers (4,400) will be recruited as Grade III Principals by the Education Ministry in June, Ministry Secretary, Upali Marasinghe told the Education Times.

He said that a competitive examination will be held in June, while applications will close on May 11.
He said that, however, only teachers in service will be eligible to apply for the posts.

“Since 2005, there has been no recruitments to this position, and hence, the number of vacancies are high. That is the reason a high number is to be recruited,” he said.
He said due to the vacancies some of the schools did not have teachers, as some of the principals’ duties had been performed by the teachers.
Mr Marasinghe said that an islandwide survey was conducted in schools to ascertain the number of vacancies, before the recruitment programme was launched.

He said that a Degree from a recognised University or from the National Institute of Education, and five years of satisfactory teaching service is required. (DW)
