National Schools stop admissions from Grades 2 to 5: Education Ministry

View(s):

The Education Ministry has issued a fresh circular restricting admission of children to National schools from Grades 2 to 5, to minimise irregularities, Education Ministry Secretary, Upali Marasinghe said.

He said that, this was in view of appeals by parents regarding admissions to these Grades, which are under review, where vacancies need to be available if the appeals are successful.

Mr Marasinghe said that they have received information that, currently, students are being admitted to these Grades.

“If there are complaints that students are being admitted to these Grades, after this new circular, we will have to initiate action against those respective principals,” he said.

He said only the Education Ministry Secretary is authorized to permit admission to these Grades.

Hence, politicians will not be able to interfere in such admissions.
“We noticed that, in the absence of such a circular, some principals and directors were admitting children into these Grades,” he said.
However, there will be exceptions such as, if a local council member is elected to Parliament, if a student comes from overseas and in the event of a transfer of a parent who is a government officer.

Meanwhile, complaints from parents of successful Grade 5 Scholarship candidates unable to secure a suitable school, will be received until end March. (DW)
