Cassian House won the overall championship of the St. Benedict’s College Inter-House Athletic Meet held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo last Saturday. Cassian House was declared overall champions after it amassed 749 points from categories, the upper school and primary.

The overall victors clinched the upper school athletic meet with a tally of 612 points while their primary athletes won the junior title with a tally of 137 points.

Besides clinching the Overall Championship Trophy donated by the St. Benedict’s 2007 All-Island Champion team, the Cassian House seniors won the Rev. Bro. Alexander Cyrillus Memorial Challenge Shield donated by Saman Upasena while the juniors claimed the Rev. Bro. James Memorial Challenge Shield.

The Rev. Bro. Baptist Croos Memorial Challenge Shield for the overall runners-up, donated by Dudley Thambinayagam, was won by Claude House who collected 533 points. Besides Cassian and Claude, Luke and Camillus Houses competed at the St. Benedict’s College Inter-House Athletic Meet, which culminated under floodlights.

This year’s athletic meet comes as a special occasion for St. Benedict’s who celebrates its Sesquicentennial Year. The school, which was inaugurated in 1865, will be 150 years old this year and celebrations commenced with the annual Inter-House Athletic Meet. Distinguished old Ben, Felix Dias, graced the occasion as chief guest and distributed the awards to the winners. Dias who had an illustrious sports career at St. Benedict’s, was athletic captain of 1965, cricket captain of 1965 and 1966, head prefect of 1966 and also the Under-19 champion athlete in 1963 and 1964. This year with the Sesquicentennial Year Celebrations, the organising committee decided to combine both the upper school and primary meets on the same day. – NA
