The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) will announce today its decision which of the two main candidates it would support at the January 8 presidential election, a member of the party’s high command said last night. He said party leader Rauff Hakeem would meet Muslim religious dignitaries at 6 a.m. today and thereafter an announcement would be made at 10 a.m. at a news conference at party headquarters in Colombo. Mr. Hakeem held last minute talks with Minister Basil Rajapaksa last night regarding SLMC demands, the SLMC official said, adding that the Government’s side sought more time to respond.

Mr. Hakeem attending a wedding of a journalist last night was questioned by media personnel about the SLMC decision, but he neither denied nor confirmed reports that the party would quit the Government today.
