A book on Peace and the importance of securing Human Rights (HR) was launched by the Education Ministry last week.

The book, ‘Save Rights for Peace’, targeting Secondary schoolchildren (Grades 6-11), is published in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, with the assistance of ‘Save the Children’ organisation.

The Ministry said plans are afoot to distribute 10 copies to each school to be used in school libraries. The Ministry also plans to distribute the books to teachers of Citizenship Education, with the assistance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a classroom text.

The National Institute of Education is to train teachers’ Peace and HR as a subject. The Ministry said the child-friendly book consists of children’s drawings, and written in a manner students can understand the concepts of Peace and HR.

According to the Ministry, this book is a step towards meeting recommendation 9.60 of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report. The recommendation is to provide comprehensive, island-wide HR Education programmes targeting schoolchildren, youth, members of the Security Forces, the Police etc.

Save the Children Sri Lanka Country Director William Lynch, and Educational Publications Dept Commissioner General, Tissa Hewawithane were present at the launch. (NF)
