Training of monitors to be deployed for the Presidential election has got underway by the respective monitoring groups.

Polls observers are being briefed about the election laws and action which could be initiated in the event of election law violations.

Over 15,000 observers from seven monitoring groups are to be deployed island wide.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said around 4,250 election monitors including 4,000 stationary observers and 250 mobile units will be deployed on election day for monitoring purposes.

CMEV chief coordinator D.M. Dissanayake said that the selected monitors have to undergo a special training programme which would improve their knowledge of election laws and procedures to be taken under special conditions.

The 4,000 stationary monitors will be stationed at polling stations island wide under the guidance of their respective district coordinators, while the 250 mobile units which include 200 long term observers will be engaged in monitoring in each electorate at the same time.
