Cabinet approved Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena’s proposal to increase the monthly allowance of student teachers in National Colleges of Education, during their academic training period, by Rs 1,000, to Rs 3,500, and during the in-service training period by Rs 1,000, to Rs 4,000 per month, in keeping with the 2015 Budget proposals.

This Monthly Allowance is given for Food and Service Facilities of Student Teachers in National Colleges of Education

Minister Gunawardena said that this decision was taken by the Food Committee which said that the present allowance was inadequate for their monthly food requirements.

“I consulted the President on the matter, who said the amount should be increased to Rs 4,000,” he said.

Of this amount, Rs 1,000 will go into their account, while Rs 3,000 will be given to the trainees.

Around 6,000 persons will benefit under this scheme.

Meanwhile, he said that, trainee students of the Polonnaruwa Pulathisipura Training College had saved Rs 1.1 million by putting aside a sum from their allowance for several years, and have requested that a vehicle be purchased with this money to transport dry rations and other food items for them.

“I will put this matter before Cabinet for approval, so that they can get a vehicle for the training centre,” he added.
