Grade 5 student drowns in river

A grade 5 student died on Christmas Day, drowning in the Karandeniya river, a Coroner’s court was told.

A student of Malharus Madya Maha Vidyalaya in Galle, Rishan Fathima had visited her aunt for the vacation when the incident took place. The coroner’s court was told that Fathima was bathing in the river with her three siblings when she got stuck in the mud of a four foot deep quarry on Monday.

She was rushed to the Galle Hospital and later transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo where she passed away on Thursday.
Sudden Deaths Inquirer Resha Samarasekara concluded that death was due to drowning.

The body of the girl was handed over to the parents, without a post-mortem for burial.

Borella Police PC Saman Perera led evidence at the inquiry and assisted the post-mortem.
