Tharindu shines as ‘Thora’ run to second win
Dual purpose bowler Tharindu Ratnayake’s seven wicket haul enabled S. Thomas’ crush Dharmasoka MV Ambalangoda by an innings and 187 runs in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter which ended at Mt Lavinia yesterday to record their second outright win of the season.
The Thomians were well set for the kill when play ended on the opening day having made a formidable score of 283 for 5 declared which came on the back by an unbeaten 102 made by Chenutha Wickramasinghe and a half ton by Helakamal Nanayakkara. Later Shenal de Silva, Tharindu Ratnayake and Helakamal Nanayakkara combined with effect as the trio sharing eight wickets between them to bundle out the Sokians for a paltry 58. Dharmasoka MV made to follow on ended day one badly placed on 10 for 5.

The second day’s proceedings lasted only 22 overs as Tharindu who finished with four wickets on day one added another three and ran through the Sokians batting which succumbed to a score of just 37 runs. Tharindu ended with top figures of 7 for 13 for a match bag of 10 for 29.St Benedict’s beat the rain to record a convincing ten wicket win over Wesley who succumbed to their second outright defeat in the match concluded at Campbell Park yesterday.
The Benedictines put themselves in a strong position during the post lunch session as they had the Wesleyites batting the second time struggling on 35 for 5 before they recovered to make a score of 105.
Earlier the Bens resuming on their overnight score of 139 for 6 went on to make a modest score of 216 for a lead of 81 runs and then chasing just 25 runs for victory they reached the target in 2.1 overs.
St. Joseph’s after being in a strong position against Mahinda had to be satisfied with a first inning win in the match concluded at Darley Road yesterday.
Mahinda resuming on their overnight score of 44 for 5 did not last long as they were bundled out for 84 in reply to the Josephians score of 222. Mahinda made to follow on with a deficit of 138 runs was struggling on 55 for 5 before Shashika Udara who made an unbeaten 81 came to their rescue to deny the Darley Road boys a win.
