The 87th ABA Men and Women Clifford Cup boxing meet conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABA) is scheduled to be held over five days from October 27 to 31 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

The champion men’s and women’s Slimline BC and MAS Southern will be seeking to retain the title

The meet is open to male and female boxers who are over 18 and under 40 years of age and who have already participated in major meets conducted by the ABA and also the winner and runner up of the novices, intermediate, Stubbs shield and junior nationals boxing meet.
Two top teams Slimline BC who are the defending champions and runner up Army who have been on loggerheads in the past will no doubt be the cynosure of all eyes.

M.Y.M. Dilshan will be the boxer to take note as he will be coming into the meet having participated at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and at the Asian Games held in Incheon, Korea recently.

The notable absentee is P.D. Suresh the best boxer at the recently concluded Layton Cup as he will not be participating due to an injury sustained during training sessions.

In the women’s category defending champions MAS Southern will go all out to retain the trophy. Last year the two champion teams Slimline BC and MAS Southern produced the best boxer and loser in both categories.

In the men’s category P.D. Suresh was the best boxer and D. Wijeratne was the best loser while in the women’s category Anusha Kodituwakku and Kosala Nilmini were adjudged the best boxer and best loser.

The general weigh-in preceded by the medical examination for both the categories will be held on October 27 from 7.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. at the same venue. The weigh-in and medical examination for the remaining four days will be from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.mThe draw is scheduled to take place at 10.00 a.m. on October 27 and the AIBA approved computer draw and seeding system will be used for the draw.

As this is a team championship all clubs are required to enter a minimum of four boxers for both male and female categories and these boxers should fulfill all eligibility requirements of the meet. -MSA
