One hundred foreign students have been offered full scholarships at Sri Lanka universities, in a fresh bid to promote local campuses, Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr Sunil Nawaratne told the Education Times.

“The scholarships offered are for the new academic year and will be for Degrees or Postgraduate studies,” he explained.

Scholarship recipients are from 58 countries including the US, UK and other European countries, though the bulk of them will be from Asian countries.

These students will be entitled to free air tickets, free accommodation and US$ 250 per month for their expenses.

The programme was first launched in 2011, when only five scholarships were offered, while the following year it increased to 15 and last year increased to 45.

“We may be able to increase the scholarships even this year, if there is a demand,” Dr Nawaratne explained. He said that the objective was to popularise local universities among foreign students and attract paying-students.

He said that it would also benefit students who wish to conduct research, particularly in the field of Agriculture and Botany.

The scholarship recipients already here are being taken on a three-day trip to cultural heritage sites in the north, north central, south and central provinces.
